News and Gossip for the day

Salman Khan: I'm a difficult Boyfriend

Your fans may not want to see you as a corrupt cop in Dabangg.
He is the hero. If his salary is Rs 6,000 and he has a family of 15 to support, what will he do? You are bound to earn more money through other means. But if something kills your self-respect, then I don’t think you should do it. There is always a line yaar. I can go down to a level. But if you cross the level of your zameer (conscience), which a lot of people do, then it’s disgusting. To make money out of someone’s misery is the most disgusting thing ever. But if it doesn’t make much of a difference to you, then do it. Think of yourself as Robin Hood. He stole, but he stole from the rich and gave to the poor.

Stars often visit religious places before the release of a film. What about you?
Hmm. Na, na. Everyone has different beliefs.

What is your belief? Put in your work and forget about it?
Yeah pretty much. You want your film to do well but when you go to religious places to only pray for the success of your film, it’s selfish. Some people actually believe that when you want something you must go. That’s such a sho-sha (put on), just show. You should go there quietly.

Is that possible? Who does that?
Katrina (Kaif) actually believes in this. When she visits such religious places, she does it quietly. It’s not done just before a release. She goes to these places all the time. She goes because she really believes in them. My sister Arpita visits religious places too. So does my mother. I don’t go because a lot of disturbance is caused. There are people praying and when they see me there is chaos. I don’t like that. If I want to ask God for something, I ask wherever I am. And if I do go I make sure no one is aware about it.

What surprises you the most about life?
People surprise me every single day. Sometimes for the better, sometimes for the worse.

Have you painted while shooting for Dabangg?
No. I have yet to do a self-portrait.

You are a very successful star, which naturally comes with a certain discipline. But your ‘bratty’ image precedes you.
I haven’t struggled, I haven’t worked hard. I have taken it lightly. But I have also gone and given it my best, which is about two or three or four per cent of my capabilities. I have just been fortunate. All the stuff that was written about me was no big deal. It was not like I was one of these terrorists who deserve to go through all that. And somewhere it’s now known that I was not the person responsible for all those things. So without me saying anything people understand that.

Are you a difficult boyfriend?
Yes, I’m a difficult boyfriend but now I am more patient in love.

How do you deal with depression and low moments?
I go down to the gate of my building and take a look at my watchman.

Any plans to write your autobiography or are you going to commission me to write it?
(Sighs) See, I will not be able to write any lies. And I won’t be able to write the truth either. So, a book on me is out of the question.

Govinda surprise package in Raavan?

After Govinda signed up for Mani Ratnam’s modern-day version of the Ramayana, speculations about what his character in the film would be like have been taking the rounds. The actor is reportedly playing a character, modelled on Hanuman. He will be seen playing a forest officer who helps Vikram’s character Dev to hunt for his wife, Ragini (played by Aishwarya Rai Bachchan), who has been abducted by Beera (Abhishek Bachchan).

Reportedly, Ratnam, miffed with Govinda’s tardiness, altered his scenes, and the actor was aghast to learn that his part had been abruptly chopped. The actor’s absence at the music launch in May, compounded the speculation that there was something awry between the actor and the director.
Ratnam denies trimming the actor’s role: “Govinda’s role has shaped up amazingly in context of the storyline.”

When asked why he cast the actor in the forest officer’s role, Ratnam explains, “Sometimes we cast faces against the image. When you’re putting the cast together, you realise that for a certain role with limited screen time, a star will be essential because he or she can add meat to the character. Govinda easily blended into his character.”

Ratnam points out that one has to see the film to understand his perspective behind his casting. “Govinda put in an extra effort and made the role interesting despite its screen duration. He makes a considerable impact with his performance,” the filmmaker adds.

A source close to the film says that since Raavan was shot approximately in 200 days and every actor’s role was reduced a little to maintain the flow and rhythm of the story. “Govinda is known to speak his mind. If he had to make an issue, he would have addressed it to Mani sir. But he seemed pleased.”

According to an industry source, Govinda was overheard telling his friends at the IIFA Weekend in Colombo that he had heard great trade reports of Raavan. “He had said that he was looking forward to seeing it. He even made statements there about his wonderful experience of working with ‘Mani Sir’,” adds our source.

5 reasons to watch Veer

Salman Khan’s magnanimous opus Veer releases this week and we give you five reasons to watch the film.

Salman Khan

Of course it goes without saying that Salman Khan is the biggest drawing force towards Veer . After the super-success of Wanted , Salman strikes back with more strength and vigour. More interestingly in this film he plays a warrior, a character that fits him to the T but he never got to play so far. Call it the Gladiator effect or inspiration from our very own Dharam Veer , Salman Khan is looking amazing as a patriotic soldier fighting for his community.

History repeats itself

After quite some time, one would get to see a film which goes in the past much beyond the independence era. Veer has a British setting but starts in early 18th century India when the foreigners were enslaving the country and capturing several territories. Salman Khan plays a warrior from the Pindari community who would fight till the last breath to save their motherland.

The scale on which the film is mounted shows in every frame. Right from the grand sets, to horses and elephants to the action pieces, Veer is magnificent.

2 Katrina for the price of one

The debutante lead actress of the film Zarine Khan made news from the day the film went on floors. Zarine bears a striking resemblance of Salman Khan’s girlfriend Katrina Kaif. Salman seems to have this penchant to cast actresses who bear striking resemblance to his girlfriends. First it was Sneha Ullal who looked a replica of Aishwarya Rai in Lucky – No Time for Love . Now it’s Zarine Khan who resembles Katrina Kaif. Zarine takes the resemblance as a compliment and the curiosity factor will surely pull in audiences.

Even the other actress Lisa Lazarus comes too close to Katrina Kaif. So it’s two Katrina Kaif for the price of one ticket.

Anil Sharma

Behind the great canvas of the film is a humble hero in the form of director Anil Sharma. The man has to his credit the biggest hit Bollywood has ever seen – Gadar Ek Prem Katha . With the authenticity he brought in to the period treatment and the grand scale of Gadar , one can be assured that Veer is handled by the right person.

Braveheart SALMAN!

The brawny superstar’s latest film is on the lines of Mel Gibson’s Braveheart and Brad Pitt’s Troy

Salman Khan’s latest, Veer, a period drama, is quintessentially Bollywood, of course, but its makers feel that it has a strong international appeal as well. They’ve put a lot of effort into making the epic, an Eros International Media Ltd presentation and Vijay Galani Moviez production, on par with international standards.
In fact, there’s a feeling among them that Veer has interesting parallels with Hollywood films like
Gladiator, Troy and Braveheart. Mel Gibson wrote Braveheart, while Salman penned Veer himself. “Salman is the ideal star to play a warrior; his low voice and impressive physique combine to give him a huge screen presence. He is a larger-thanlife persona who can add charisma to a vengeancedriven heroic character,” says Galani.
Director Anil Sharma has tried to give Veer the feel of a classic epic project. It was shot extensively in Rajasthan, where action sequences involving thousands of fighters, horses, hundreds of elephants and camels, including huge sequences such as a train robbery and a full-fledged war, were shot. Shooting also took place across the United Kingdom, using chariots, vintage costumes, horse carts and items distinctive of the late 19th century. In fact, it’s the first Bollywood film to be shot in the premises of the Buckingham Palace. Salman took almost 20 years to write this saga of a freedom fighter, a Pindari soldier who fought for social justice and independence. “Rarely does an entertainment house get the opportunity to work with superstars to produce a movie that’s of the grandeur and scale of Veer; the magic of storytelling on a large canvas, a story written by the lead star himself. At Eros, we believe that this could well kickstart a trend in Indian cinema,” says managing director and group CEO - India, Eros International Media Ltd, AP Parigi, about the film that’s going to be released on January 22, 2010.

I will make a good father, says Salman Khan

Mumbai: With rumours abounding about Salman Khan’s split with Katrina Kaif, we decided to get candid with the man himself. Sallu pauses for a second in true Bollywood style when asked about whether marriage is on the cards, and then blurts out, “Marriage will happen soon. I definitely want to get married. I have told my dad about it too.”

But if he gets married, will it be Katrina? Salman nods his head rather cryptically. “Has Katrina told you this (about the split)?” he questions. “This has to come from Katrina. I won’t react to these rumours because I know how and where they are coming from. You will never hear these things coming out of Katrina. I have been married off and broken off a billion times in the past; I don’t think I need to break my head over this. I do want to get married but I don’t want to go through what other people go through after marriage.”

He adds that he’s looking forward to being a papa. “I am sure I will make a good father. I love to spend time with kids and it would be a blessing to have kids of my own. Otherwise, why do you get married? Marriage is for the sake of children. One day I would definitely want to play with my own kids. Don’t worry, I won’t make you wait for too long,” he laughs.

“I am not just past forty but I am on the wrong side of it. I am forty-five. I do feel the strain of my age. I do run out of breath at times while doing strenuous action scenes or dance moves. But I also think that the only way to turn old is to kill the young man inside you. I am genetically stronger and I will still be able to do what I am doing for some more years,” Salman ends.
