Youth power zindabad! I Hate Luv Storys a success
The writing is clear on the wall: The youth holds the key to success. A film starring a fresh pair, exceptional music and remarkable promotion can entice and lure viewers to cineplexes. That, in a nutshell, explains the terrific opening weekend business of I HATE LUV STORYS. Of course, you cannot overlook the marvellous contribution by Karan Johar and UTV, two names that are synonymous with qualitative cinema. They ensured that the film was talked-about and more than visible prior to its release.
It was a foregone conclusion that I HATE LUV STORYS would open very well at the ticket window. The rom-com radiated the right vibes and like most Karan Johar movies, the urban audience/multiplex junta was expected to give a warm reception to the film.
If you scrutinize the business of I HATE LUV STORYS, you'd realize that the metros and centres with plexes have contributed around 85% to 90% of its business. The contribution by the youth is overwhelming. The single screens haven't reacted well, but let's not forget that a film with an English title and classy treatment finds it difficult to penetrate into smaller centres or the mass-dominated belt. The Salman Khan starrer WANTED, a hardcore masala film, reaped a harvest from single screens, while MAIN AUR MRS. KHANNA, starring the same actor, was not only rejected at urban centres, but also single screens and mass-dominated areas.
Monday being Bharat Bandh, the plexes/single screens resumed screenings from evening shows onwards. Of course, the business was severely affected, but the general consensus is that the film will remain steady on weekdays and also in its second weekend at metros.
What goes in its favour is its economics. The film was made in a moderate budget and sold to UTV for an equally nominal price [Rs. 18 cr.; excluding P. & A.], who in turn sold the film to various territory distributors. Karan has recovered his investment, UTV too recovered the money invested in the film and made profits before its release and with a terrific start on hand, the territory distributors have won half the battle. The nominal costs on one hand and the excellent shares from plexes on the other should ensure a quick recovery for the buyers. In fact, everyone associated with I HATE LUV STORYS -- the producers, the principal distributor and the territory distributors -- is likely to earn from it, which is quite a rarity in today's times.
The title may be I HATE LUV STORYS, but the makers and distributors are chanting a different tune post its release: 'We luv luv storys'.

I Hate Luv Storys is pro-love: Punit Malhotra
Don't go by the name; Sonam Kapoor and Imran Khan starrer I Hate Luv Storys is totally pro-love, says young director Punit Malhotra, who has given a 'fun treatment' to the much ridiculed Bollywood romances.
Punit is confident that the film, about a young man who falls in love despite being cynical about the whole concept, will find a connect with the audience.
"It is very young, fresh and totally pro-love stories. It is not anti-anything. We all have grown up watching Bollywood romances and no matter what we say, we connect to them somewhere. They may be soppy, cheesy but they are feel-good films. People do associate with them at some level," Punit told PTI.
"It is a take-off from romantic films of Bollywood in a very nice way. It is a little tongue-and-cheek way of looking at all the romantics films and stories," he adds.
The film, produced by Karan Johar's Dharma productions, hits theatres this July.
At 28, he may seem too young to handle the intricacies of filmmaking, but Punit, nephew of fashion desinger Manish Malhotra, is a veteran when it comes to working behind the camera.
He has assisted director-producer Karan Johar on blockbusters like Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham, Kal Ho Naa Ho, Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna, Amol Palekar on Paheli and Tarun Mansukhani on Dostana as creative director.
"I wanted to turn director couple of years back but for some reasons I did not get into it. But I have gone all out with this film. I don't think I am too young for direction," says Punit, who slogged behind the camera for close to ten years.
His closeness with the lead actress of his film has sparked romance rumours but the director rubbishes such reports.
"I don't know where it came from. It is total rubbish. People come and say anything and go away. You can laugh at times and get irritated at times but can do nothing about it. In fact, it was Sonam, who told me to keep my cool about such rumours," he says.

Aaj ki taaza khabar - NEWS!
AKON and Ra.one
Not so long ago we told you how Akon was doing a song in Ra.One absolutely free (read Akon to sing for SRK for FREE!) as he was fond of Shah Rukh Khan. Now we hear that Akon is singing yet another number for the album. Apparently he had so much fun recording the first track that he decided to do a repeat. Looks like SRK’s charm got to Akon as well.

It looks like this is going to be the year of spoofs. Few of the most awaited films like I Hate Luv Storys, Action Replayy and Tees Maar Khan will spoof Hindi film sequences of the past. Sonam Kapoor, Imran Khan, Katrina Kaif, Akshay Kumar and Aishwarya Rai will all be aping the songs of the '70s and '80s.

It seems that director Prakash Jha has been maha impressed by Katrina Kaif’s histrionics in Raajneeti. So much so that he has already earmarked her for his next project. Amitabh Bachchan has also been reportedly cast in the project and so is Jha’s favourite Ajay Devgn. The film is reportedly based on the reservation politics and how it affects the common man’s life.

Sonam Kapoor: "I am in a space where I don’t want to date anyone"

Theirs seems to be a regular household. Dad’s gone to work, mom’s out meeting her friends, the children (Sonam, Rhea, Harshvardhan) are here, there and everywhere doing their own thing. Sonam is busy resisting chocolate, which is truly a hard day’s work in her estimate. “My parents really dote on us kids. We really believe the sun shines out of our bums because that’s the impression they have given us. They have given us enough self-esteem.”
She deviates a bit stating that being an actor is not the be all and end all of her life. She can do so many other things. “We kids don’t think our careers define us. We have a good grounding and value system. At the same time we are not ashamed to work. I think it’s a very middle class thing to believe in working hard in order to earn the right amount of money. I’ve never been afraid of being a peon. As an assistant director I ran around Chor Bazaar, taking the rickshaw or the train. My mom never let me take the bus but I could take the train or a rickshaw. If I quit acting tomorrow I’ll survive. I haven’t taken money from my parents since I was 17.”
She talks about the varied roles she has played. Her upcoming films have her pitted against art film favourite Abhay Deol in Aisha (her home production) and heartthrob Imran Khan in I Hate Luv Storys. She says she is more like Simran in I Hate… than Aisha. “Aisha is hyper, a meddler and Simran is more real, like me. She is an art director in the film. I used to do art direction and when Punit Malhotra (the director) came to me with the script, I was like, “This is me. You have used me as your inspiration, haven’t you?”
I immediately have to ask. But even before I open my mouth to frame the question she gives me a knowing look. “No, I am not dating Punit,” she shrugs. “He is a wonderful guy and we are great friends but we are not seeing each other. I am in a space where I don’t want to date anyone. I don’t want to be in a relationship just now. But more importantly even if I were, I wouldn’t talk about it. You would never get a confirmation or a denial from me.”
Both these films are important to Sonam. She hasn’t had a certified box office hit so far. Both her earlier outings, opuses as they were, came a cropper. Ask her if she is a little worried and she looks totally taken aback, “Why should I be worried? I have only played author backed roles so far and I am continuing to do so. I may sound immodest but I don’t think filmmakers like Rakeysh Mehra and Sanjay Leela Bhansali would have invested Rs 50 crore on me if they hadn’t seen something worthwhile. I have talent backing me.”
Yet ‘arch rival’ Deepika Padukone seems to have raced a little ahead. Sonam’s brow crinkles in exasperation as she remarks, “I don’t think anyone has raced ahead of anyone else. We all have our own paths to follow and our own graphs. Deepika is in a very different mould than me. We both have our own journeys. We were pitted against each other during Saawariya and Om Shanti Om because the media couldn’t possibly pit Ranbir Kapoor against Shah Rukh Khan for god's sake.” About her equation with the leggy contemporary she says, “I knew Deepika through Ranbir. I am not sure what equation I have with her now that they have broken up. There was potential for a friendship there but I guess our busy schedules got in the way.”
And no question on Deepika can be (unfortunately) complete without a question on Ranbir . Her childhood friend, reportedly one-time sweetheart, debut co-star. Where do they stand today especially when the reports about their equation keep varying every six months? “Ranbir and I are and will always be good friends,” she says softly. “But lately we have drifted apart. We don’t talk much. But I do know that when we do it will be from exactly where we left off.”

Sonam to act with Akki in Thank You
If you thought Sonam Kapoor was taking it too easy in tinsel town, then think again. She currently has her home production Aisha's shooting going according to plan and is also shooting for Karan Johar's production I Hate Love Stories with Imran Khan.
And the young actress has more in her kitty. She has bagged another big project and this time it is with Akshay 'Khiladi' Kumar.
The couple has been signed on for Aneez Bazmi's UTV production and promising venture Thank You.
