February 11, 2010
He's the biggest movie star in the world. Because even if you never heard of Shah Rukh Khan, a billion people in India — and more across the Middle East, Africa and beyond — certainly have. He's the biggest draw in the outrageously oversized films that come from the Hindi-film industry often called Bollywood.
How big a draw is that? More people around the world watch Shah Rukh Khan than Meryl Streep or Brad Pitt. Maybe Meryl Streep and Brad Pitt. His film Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, made in 1995, is still playing in one Mumbai cinema.
"In India, the films are not looked upon just as entertainment," Khan says. "They're a way of life.
And Shah Rukh Khan has made them his life. At age 44, he owns a production company and is host of India's version of Who Wants to be a Millionaire. And he keeps starring in Bollywood productions — films that get shown everywhere from remote Indian villages to multiplexes in New York.
In some ways, that broad distribution requires a certain style of filmmaking.
"The idea is that you have to some way make a film that appeals to my 90-year-old grandmother and to the 9-year-old kid," Khan says. "So it's like a cabaret. Like, I have a couple of films written by American guys, and I bring them back to Mumbai, make them sit down. And then I ... say: 'OK, here's the song, and here's the mother.' 'But there's no mother in the film.' And I say, 'There has to be a mother in the film.'"
In movies that commonly last three hours, Khan might howl his lines, with his hair flying everywhere. He may dance on the roof of a moving train. It comes with the territory.
"People talk about Bollywood being very kitsch," he acknowledges, "and just songs and dances. And over the top and colorful."
But in his latest production, being released the U.S. Feb. 12, he's not doing anything quite that over-the-top. He plays a Muslim man with Asperger's syndrome, who's driven after the events of Sept. 11 to constantly repeat a single explosive phrase:
"My name is Khan, and I'm not a terrorist."
From A Real-Life Horror, 'The Butterfly Effect' For Two Innocents
A Muslim star in a mostly Hindu country, Khan says he's always been interested in challenge of starting from a real-life incident and weaving a fictional story around it.
"And there is an aspect of Islam that needs to be addressed now," he says. "Otherwise this demarcation, this divide we keep on increasing. So I just thought we should have a message about a film with humanity. Just goodness."
In one way, Khan says, his character is speaking for millions of Muslims with that startling sentence.

"Yes and no — because the line is actually very emotional," he says. "People who are autistic or have Aspergers have a compulsive behavior. ... He just gets this line in his head, and compulsively keeps saying, "My name is Khan and I'm not a terrorist. And it's a more emotional thing."
The movie, he says, isn't really about Sept. 11, or about terrorism. It's a love story. It's about "the butterfly effect of an incident like this."
"That you know, two people who are actually unrelated to an incident somewhere in the world and how their lives and their love changes, and gets completely thwarted."
Soon after he finished filming My Name is Khan, India's biggest film star almost found himself thwarted. On a visit to the United States, he was detained and questioned for two hours at U.S. immigration. The incident made front-page headlines across India.
"I didn't react to it as vehemently as I think everyone people back home did," Khan says. Because I'm used to it. You know, my name is Khan, really. And I'm sent to the other side, which is okay. I don't make a big issue out of it."
Others were more offended, though Khan makes a joke of it now.
"The foreign minister in India said that, you know, we also are going to do the same to the Western world people when they come," Khan says. "So I said, 'Give me the chance to frisk Angelina Jolie if she comes to India, please. I should be the first one to try this.'"
'Our Fantasies Are Very Real'
My Name Is Khan isn't like most of Shah Rukh Khan's other films. Most of them, for one thing, are primarily as secular in character — while most audiences might well presume that he's playing playing a Hindu character, that character's religion isn't central to the plot.
But Khan says it wasn't a particular risk for him to make a movie about an explicitly Muslim character.
"As far as the public is concerned, India is amazingly secular. ... I am a Muslim, but I am a leading star for the last 20 years, so if you just go by that, there is no issue ever. ...
There are vested interests who will always bring that up to provoke people, which I guess keeps happening everywhere."
What the movie has in common with many Bollywood fantasies is this: Khan's character comes to America.
"I say this to everyone: Our fantasies are about earning a good living," he says. "Having maybe a car — not two. Getting an education for your kids. Our fantasies are not about getting to be president of the country, to sit in a rocket and go and break a meteor. Our fantasies are very real.
"As a matter of fact," he continues, "I find the Western cinema very fantastic. You've got aliens. And you've got things we don't know about. ... Blue creatures. You have Batman, you have Superman. I remember the first time I was here — someone interviewing me in a hotel, and they said, 'Your films are such fantasies.'
"And I'm like, We are fantasies? Our guys just want to sing and dance on the roads. Our guys just want to drive a big car. Our guys just want to come to America. You know, we don't want to go to Pandora. ... America is our Pandora."

SRK interview about the economics of MNIK!

Exotic black coffee, a long conversation against a setting sun from Mannat annexe’s library. Can one ask for more from Shah Rukh Khan. SRK talked
Shah rukh Khan
about his upcoming movie in detail. Excerpts:
This is the first film Red Chillies is co-producing with Dharma. Any particular reason?
My Name is Khan (MNK) is an expensive film — actually, Karan does not make cheap films. There are two reasons we joined hands: one because I am of the opinion that when you make a film you should try not to pre-sell it, specially if it is a little. Second, I did not want Karan to take a loan for this film and also I wanted to own (even 50%) of a film which is called My Name is Khan! A film like an Om Shanti Om, can be pre-sold, as it is a regular commercial film. But films like say Chak De or MNK, require a freedom to be made with a free hand, without any commerce in mind.
Is the film a viable project then?
MNK the most expensive film Karan and I have done. A 90-day shoot in the US done within SAG rules (US union rules) with a staff ratio of 60:40 works out at least 20-25% more expensive. Add at least five to ten recces before the final 90-day schedule began and you know how expensive it can get. Commercially, of course, it is not a very viable film for the actor, director and actor-producer at this point, as we have not included our fees because then it would be too expensive. So we made it in just the money Fox Star gave us for it. But it’s our film and it’s special.
Like the fantastic writer of ‘Iron Man’ Hawk Ostby told me, “Some work you do for business, some you do for love,” so this one is for love. However, I don’t think the box-office will really be an issue. It will open up very well because this is a film which will work for the class — what we call the multiplex audience as well as the single-screen audience but not for very different reasons either. Actually, one can always give an outstandingly corporate answer as well.
The business has worked for Karan and me because the greatest businesses are done in the greatest simplicity. I have never done so many tours for a film — I go to Indore and Lucknow over the next two days. I have done it for big cities but this film has an Islamic aspect so I want to go to the interiors and tell the Muslims to take a look at this part of the film which is part-Islamic. I want the message of the film to reach the largest number of audience.
I truly believe that 90% of successful businesses are passion decisions-whatever number-crunching people do in boardrooms, thoughts and ideas and marketing, it is the idea which is the mainstay. And, therefore, no apprehensions. When film-making becomes only business it will make money, but it will not be mind-numbing anymore, it will not be breaking any paths. It has to be a passionate decision and also make some business sense.
Do you see the expense justified?
Absolutely. It was also necessary as MNK is largely a journey film, it needed to look interesting visually or it would just have been in a bus going to wherever. Even in terms of scale this is very different from what Karan has done before. There are no set havelis, no dancers, there is no big costume drama... it is just a story of one man travelling across the continent.

Discuss
Fox Searchlight Pictures (Slumdog Millionaire) presents MY NAME IS KHAN, the biggest and most anticipated new Indian motion picture of 2010, an epic romantic drama with universal appeal.

Music composers Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy are India's must renowned and accomplished artists, and the trio has been responsible for some of the biggest hit soundtracks of the last decade. The album has Sufi inspired sounds and features amazing vocalists from the sub-continent -- Rahat Fateh Khan, Shafqat Amanat Ali and Adnan Sami. Just finished watching Kajol, SRK and Karan talking to Rajeev Masand. Man, I really enjoy Masand's child-like wonder and enjoyment in cinema. He makes a terrific interviewer. The trio talk of their friendship and that is palpable throughout the interview. You can tell that these three have known each other for ages and like each other a LOT.

Shah Rukh Khan dazzles !
Guess what is the driving force behind King Khan? As the Bollywood star, Shahrukh Khan himself revealed here on Monday, it is the fear of becoming poor that keeps him busy.
The crowd lapped with glee Khan’s success mantra at the Koramangala Indoor Stadium, where he donned the avatar of a management guru anchoring a B-School Quiz organised by the Indian Institute of Planning and Management (IIPM).
Enthralling the audience with his trademark extempore lecture, and impromptu comments, Shahrukh Khan reigned supreme.
Although the programme was scheduled to start at 4.30 pm, it could actually begin only at 6.30 pm. But there was no sign of the impatience for the audience, as Khan eventually made an appearance sporting a black business-suit.
The entire stadium reverberated with whistles and laughter for almost two minutes when the star started his conversation with his avid fans in Kannada asking them - ‘Hege Iddeera’.
Recalling his Bangalore days, he said his grand parents are from this City who lived somewhere on Nandidurga Extention near Jayamahal Extention. He spent six years of his life in Bangalore untill he moved to Delhi.
Concept of success !
Talking about his concept of success, Shahrukh said people who are scared of failure often succeed in their lives. “Success cannot teach you anything nor it can give you wisdom. But the fear of failure is the key to success. Always be scared of becoming a failure,” advised the star.
Remembering his parents, Shah Rukh said, they were not successful and remained a middle class family. He worked hard in his life because he was very afraid of poverty.Once the interactions were completed, Khan switched gears to dive straight into the quiz programme. His presentations had doses galore of famous dialogues from his popular movies.
The star even displayed his dancing skills before the audience.
The arrival of Shahrukh Khan to anchor this programme was the talk of the town and people from all walks of life made a beeline at the Koramangala Indoor Stadium to catch a glimpse of the actor.
Cops misbehave with scribes
Mediamen, particularly from the electronic media, were in for some rude treatment from the policemen deployed at the entrace of Shahrukh Khan’s event.
At least four camera-persons and reporters of national TV channels were thrown out for not hanging their identity cards round their necks.
Video-clippings available with news channels showed that the officer who misbehaved with the media was H T Ramesh, an Assistant Commissioner of Police from the Banashankari Circle.
He reportedly threatened to resort to a lathicharge if the media did not obey his instructions.
This misbehaviour compelled the television journalists to stage a demonstration outside the Koramangala Stadium. Finally, senior police officials intervened and assured to conduct an inquiry into the episode.
