James Cameron's magnum opus Avatar created a record by grossing Rs. 67.5 million on opening day itself. This makes it the biggest ever Friday opening for any Hollywood film in India.

Starring Sam Worthington, Siqourney Weaver and Zoe Saldana, the film is the story of a wounded ex-marine, thrust unwillingly into an effort to settle and exploit an exotic planet rich in bio-diversity, who eventually crosses over to lead the indigenous race in a battle for survival.

The film that released in India yesterday in 2D as well as 3D has, in fact, beaten the openings of recent films like Kurbaan, Paa and Rocket Singh.

Paid previews across India amounted to Rs 10 million, highest for any Hollywood film in India

Collections from CI single screens were also encouraging, with theatres in Delhi, Bihar, Lucknow, Kanpur, Bhopal, Allahbad, Varanasi, Jalandar, Jammu sporting a 'Houseful' board on the opening day.

Avatar was first conceived by Cameron 14 years ago, when the means to realize his vision did not yet exist.

Avatar released in India with dubbed versions in Hindi, Tamil Telugu.

Like in English, the dubbed versions have also been attracting huge crowds. "Theatres in the interiors where the film is being shown in Hindi in 2D format have been doing fantastic business and so also theatres in Tamilnadu and Andhra Pradesh," says Fox Star Sudios India CEO Vijay Singh.

'Avatar' earns $73 million in opening

James Cameron's "Avatar," a 3D extravaganza hyped as a giant leap in cinematic prowess, earned an estimated $73 million during its first weekend at the North American boxoffice, distributor 20th Century Fox said Sunday.

The opening for the costly sci-fi film fell short of industry forecasts in the $85 million range. But the News Corp. unit said the tally beat its internal projections and noted that an enormous snowstorm along the East Coast crippled business for all movies.

The weekend haul ranks as merely the sixth-biggest of the year in the United States and Canada. The 2009 record was set last month by "The Twilight Saga: New Moon," with $143 million. The all-time record of $158 million was set last year by "The Dark Knight."

The real story

As the increasingly risk-averse studios focus even more on the safe bets of franchises and adaptations designed to complement their corporate parents' quarterly results, original screenplays on a grand scale are becoming scarcer. So Avatar's ability to mix it up with the big boys such as Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Transformers 2 and Twilight deserves praise. The $73m weekend haul ranks as the 31st biggest debut in Hollywood history, but the amazing fact here is that every one of the 30 movies that rank above it is either a sequel or based on a pre-existing property (even The Passion of the Christ in 22nd place was an interpretation of pre-existing material). Admittedly, it took a film-maker of James Cameron's colossal reputation and influence and a studio like Fox to pull this off, but Avatar still gets points for originality. Now the question is, will they turn it into a franchise …
