I didn;t like the "Because I am a muslim" line from him. He is a celeb, thats why people ask him.
And yes, I do believe that muslims need to speak up against the "Islamic terrorism", since its not necessarily the truth we hear, most of the times its the sound bite which is loudest, and right now its the sound of explosives.
After that I didn;t even bother listening.
Also, in last few years, SRK has become too religious, or atleast he is lot more open about it, is there a reason? Is he try9ing to play a brand ambassador for Islam?

I was more offended by his line about how devils from every religion have created the new religion of terrorism. My hindi is not good but I read the translation in another article.

This is a shirking of responsibility for a global problem that is uniquely Islamic and cannot be equally spread to others. Politically incorrect as it may be, there aren't Hindu, Christian, or Buddhist terrorists blowing up buildings and killing in the name of their God on a worldwide scale. If there is a basic unwillingness to accept to problem first for what it is, a rogue Islamic fundamentalism, there leaves very little chance to address it head on.

This brings me to a second point. Lately I believe SRK is making a lot of missteps and this one being yet another. I don't think there is anything to be gained by turning himself into a Muslim spokesperson which he seems to be doing more and more. Religion being so divisive a topic, the most practical and wisest move would be to stay far away. Bachchan created a great mess for himself through politics and I often feel SRK is starting to do the same with religion. If a fan like me has smoke coming out of my ears after hearing that sentence (if the translation I read is correct), I'm not sure how others would react.

By the way, is this his new profession? Attending various events and giving speeches? Go make a movie, SRK! Hmph.

surprising that Chidambaran ( Home minister ) used religious terrorist and not muslim terrorists in Rajya sabha today . ahluwalia made lot of noise but he said there have been Hindu terrorists , sikh terrorists and muslims terrorists till now already .

There were Sikh terrorists in India! And what about the LTTE? They are hardly Muslim, nor are the Baader Meinhoff! I think SRK brings out his being Muslim in the same breath as talking about his secular education and marriage to a Hindu woman. This is all done to show the secular face of islam and I applaud it.

What do Sikh terrorists of the 80's have to do with India currently? Why is there a need to equate all religions at every turn even during the anniversary of 26/11? It's like you can't dare say the facts without also assuaging everyone constantly by patting their backs and saying "there, there, other religions have terrorists too..in one country or one state or well, other minor random groups. Now don't feel bad."

It's like absolving what is becoming a major issue in a major religion by glossing it over and saying terrorism is everywhere.

The LTTE is a religious group in a war of Hindu against Buddhist - and very current and relevant. Does this mean all Hindus/Tamils are terrorists?

Nia said...

Who said all Hindus or Muslims are terrorists? But there clearly needs to some acceptance and responsibility taken when a religion is being hijacked or interpreted in such a violent way and on such a LARGE scale. Localized conflict like the LTTE is not the same as what nearly the entire world has to brace for.

Whitewashing facts in order to appeal to and appease all groups is not the answer. I can't blame SRK for not having a strong voice but I wish he would just stay away and go make movies.

Well don't know if SRK should have stayed out of this politics and religion talks, but it isn't my cup of tea. So I should stay away. :P

Frankly, I hate each and every religion as religion only fools us, takes away some logic out of our minds and makes us get involve in fights, riots, etc, etc. I don't know why Allah would want an innocent goat to be cut on Eid in the name of Allah!!!! And this doesn't apply only for Muslims. Every religion takes away a bit of logic from us.

Well did I just say that I am not going to say anything on religion? Ok. I am out!. :)

I do not know what stronger voice is needed - if he says Allah's Islam is different from Mullah's Islam, IMO that is pretty strong and accurate statement. As for staying away, I recall he did that last year and was chastised by the media for NOT speaking. It is a case of damned either way. BUT he should just focus on films, there I agree.

"""Politically incorrect as it may be, there aren't Hindu, Christian, or Buddhist terrorists blowing up buildings and killing in the name of their God on a worldwide scale. ""

This either a outrageous statement or the author is unaware about the world of politics...There has been terrorists in nevery religion but yes at this momnet islamic fundamentalism at its peak...What would you call the acts of sikhs when they killed about 5000 people within a span of 10 years in Punjab???

What is ULFA and other North eastern terrorists are doing with active support of Christian missionaries??? What about the train blasts in Japan allegedely done by a fundamentalist Buddhist religious group???What was the sriram sena was doing in Balagalore and nearby areas...???

Dont tell me that all other religions dont have fundamentalists...

In this context i completely agree with SRKs' Statement...We have responsibility to wipe out fundamentalistic attitude from our own religious practices and also should stand against religious fundamentalism in our own religion..That is what SRK has done and he should be applauded for his effort...

The thing is that most other relegion is never mentioned because the terrorism associated with them are largely localized. You won't see Hindu going and blowing up in Bangladesh because some temples were destroyed. Put it other way, When US invades Iraq, Indian Muslims come on street. Why?
Every relegion has some form of extremism but with Muslim it is more Pan-Islamism thus more likely pawn in hand of rabid elements.

Agree..This is where moderate mulims has to raise their voice withoput being apologetic about their religion...I nelieve this what Javed Akhtar and SRK did in that solidarity speech...

Compare to this Smaj wadi Party has decided to observe 6 th dec as ""Black day""...This is called provocation..
