Kurbaan Scores Big In Paid Previews - BOI

Kurbaan did fantastic business in paid preview across India on Thursday. The film collected 1.25 crore nett from 500 paid preview shows.

This is the second biggest collection as far as paid previews goes after the 2 crore nett of Ghajini last year.

Kurbaan Opens To An Average Response-BOI

Kurbaan has taken a below par opening on its first day. Although the opening is decent at certain multiplexes, the film was expected to take a bigger start.

Kurbaan opened below expectations, the first day was around 55-60% at multiplexes and 35-40% at single screens. The reports of the film are mixed and its fate will depend on what sort of business it can do at multiplexes as single screens are not likely to do big business. The release of De Dana Dhan next week will also affect the lifetime business of Kurbaan.

Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani had a rock solid week with around 16 crore nett business. The two week total is now around 54 crore nett and the film should cross 60 crore nett. The lifetime share will remain lower than Wanted and Love Aaj Kal and Ajab prem Ki Ghazab Kahani will be the third biggest hit of 2009. The mega success of Hollywood film 2012 has meant the business of Ajab is a bit lower than was expected in week one as 2012 was not expected to be a mega hit in India. SUPER HIT

Agent, how you analyse the business of 2012?
It has been super, to say the least.
And come to think of it, it wasn;t evena great movie. So, you think that big time HW movies can be a big challenge to BW in near future? or this was a one off incident?

Anonymous said...

Usually bw films are affected when a spiderman or harry potter or bond films come but this is first time a Non franchise film literally massacred a bw film ( Tum Mile ). its hard to say at this point that whether it will be regular thing or one off incident but one can know which way its heading from what Avatar does on 18 and can it affect 3 Idiots or not . the level of success of 2012 is something unexpected but it would have done well was nearly guaranteed as visually good looking English films always does well in India . Rolands own 10,000 BC and Day after tomorrow also did well here .

Ajab showed 58% drop and also was slightly affected by 2012.

Is Avatar having that big of hype in India, Agent?
Even when I saw 2012 trailer, I thought that I would like it mor ethan Avtar. Avtar is looking like a very BWish masala fare, whereas 2012 looked like an action packed eaarth shattering movie, I don;t think Avtar can have as much impact as 2012, whats your take?

Anonymous said...

i didnt feel much hype for 2012 either . promos started very late in India . actually Avatar promo i saw earlier than 2012 . Trade is superexcited about Avatar so lets see how it goes . i certainly expect a biggie here and around 20-24 crores nett in India . and unlike 2012 this film can be more than just visually stunning .

Kunal said...

how much effect will it have on 3I if taht is the case?
You have any idea about how Titanic affected other BW movies?

Also, when is Avtar releasing? a week before 3I?

Anonymous said...

Titanic still holds the record for highest collection for an English film in India something in range of 35 crores(approx). No idea what effect it had on other films but a Titanic type buzz now can really affect films releasing around it badly as reach of English films has increased a lot .

Avatar releases a week before 3 Idiots and it would be really interesting to see if it affects 3 I or not as its hollywoods biggest film of year vs Bollywoods biggest film of year .

another thing is Avatar can have promo of MNIK :D

35 crs is a big number, and this number will only get bigger if Titanic like movie is released in India.

I still don;t think that there will be much impact on 3I, but Avtar will have a major dent. Same college crowd which laps up HW movies will be busy watching 3I this time.

Avatar is supposed to be the phenomenon of the year! So I guess the yuppie college crowd will catch so they can talk about it. I doubt it will effect 3I business.

as per BOI 2012 have alreday collected 35 cr nett taking all versions in to consideration...So some record tumbling here with 2012..

Anonymous said...

i think BOI is talking of gross here and not nett.

it should be around 21-22 crores nett in week 1 .

Unknown said...

AS,

They are saying the tamil and telugu versions have yeilded 8-10 cr....so i believe its 33 cr nett...

Anonymous said...

its gross Rajeev . HW studios never give figures in nett .

Unknown said...

This what BOI has to say..

2012 has emerged the biggest hit of 2009 and a blockbuster. The film grossed 25 crore nett over its first week from its English and Hindi versions. The dubbed Tamil and Telugu versions may have added a further 8-10 crore nett.

The Hindi version Pralay Ki Shuruaat grossed around 14.50 crore nett from 400 cinemas while the English version of 2012 grossed 10.50 crore nett from 175 cinemas.

The second weekend has held rock steady with drops of 40-50% as compared to first weekend. The film was sold at reasonable prices by Sony which have been recovered in the first week itself by distributors in the various circuits. Overall the English and Hindi versions are likely to have a lifetime business of 55 crore nett.

i know but its likely to be nett not Gross . BOI has mistaken here . they did the same in weekend when they reported 19 crores nett instead of gross .

Unknown said...

AS,

May be.. lets wait till second week till the figures trickle down...

Kurbaan grossed around 1.75 crore nett on Monday taking its four day business to 15.75 crore nett. The first week business is heading for 19-20 crore nett. The film had huge expectations as it was from a big banner and had a big cast but the public has rejected the film. It is unlikely that film can even do 30 crore nett lifetime business.

But with overseas collections quite good I think the film will be in safe zone - what is your opinion?

Anonymous said...

Kurbaan is poor in overseas too . first flop for Kjo and who gives him that Kareena :P

Kurbaan is below mark overseas

Pardesi said...

Hey Kareena was in K3G also. And I do not think it is poor. $400,000 from US in first weekend is poor? It is excellent for non-masala film

Anonymous said...

Kareena was in K3G ? i hardly noticed her . must have been a 10-12 mins role .

u really think Kurbaan is non-masala film ? u urself said its a thriller . even chak de , TZP did something like 350-380k and kurbaan is def not a film of that mould . its underperformer . Also overseas doesnot mean only US . i have given the link just check it .

Pardesi said...

It is a serious thriller - not a masala thriller - no romance dance type stuff. It is quite like TZP and CDI in overseas appeal. And adult and violent content doe snot help.

I thought Kaal was the first flop of KJo.

Anonymous said...

Kaal had a superb start which took it to Average status even after drop.

Pardesi said...

Kareena was hardly noticed in K3G? Let us see - how many songs was she in?

1. You are my Sonia
2. Deewana hai Dekho
3. Bole Chudiyaan

That is some not noticeable role ;-)

i went to sleep during songs of k3g :P

Kurbaan -Big Setback

Kunal said...

Kurbaan has definitely been big disappointment for KJo and everyone involved. This throws up many questions even for MNIK, are people ready for one more movie about terrorism ?
It carried very positive reviews, still a flop, something is seriously wrong with KJo and his reputation here.

Pardesi said...

MNIK is not about terrorism. K Jo is quite clear about that. I think many a fine film does not click at BO for lack of elements of "entertainment". Case in point is Swades. I have said this many times - I would take a Swades over a Veer Zaara nay day.

Boxofficekings said...

Kurbaan is a flop now, nothing can save it now, will do around 25-27 cr. Needed atleast 45 cr for safety.

Boxofficekings said...

2012 will be 3rd highest netter in India.

1) Spiderman(2006) - 36 cr

2) Titanic(1997) - 35 cr

Actually it might beat these above 2, lets see.
